Updated Steam pricing recommendations (2026)

In 2022, Valve updated their recommended regional pricing for the first time in a long while, and committed to refreshing them on an annual basis. Despite that commitment, it took over three years for the next update to arrive. In the meantime, players across Poland, Argentina, and other markets pointed out that games were regularly priced 20-30% higher than their direct USD equivalents at standard exchange rates.

In March 2026, Valve published updated pricing conversion data and two new conversion methods for pricing games across Steam's 37 currencies and 4 region groups.

Three conversion methods

Previously, Steam only offered a single set of suggested prices (what Valve now calls the "multi-variable" method). Developers can now choose from three:

1. Multi-variable conversion (Nuanced) takes into account local purchasing power, the expected cost of comparable entertainment goods, and exchange rates. This was previously the only option.
2. Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) uses public data about the average purchasing power of customers within a given country or region.
3. Exchange Rate (FX) is a straightforward currency exchange rate conversion. It is unclear how often Valve plans to update the exchange rate data.

Developers can mix and match methods, or ignore them entirely and set their own prices, as has always been the case.

SteamDB improvements

SteamDB has displayed Valve's suggested prices on each package page since 2020. We've made a few changes with this update.

SteamDB now detects which of the three conversion methods best matches a package's actual prices and displays it alongside the median deviation percentage. If the overall best match is one method but a specific currency's price exactly matches a different one, that method is shown in parentheses next to the price. Useful for spotting cases where developers mixed conversion methods across regions.

We also now check against historical Valve pricing data from 2020 and 2022. Many developers set their regional prices years ago based on Valve's recommendations at the time and never updated them. Previously these would show as deviating from the current suggestions even though they were correct when originally set. If a package's prices more closely match an older set of recommendations, that will be shown instead, for example "Closest match to Valve's 2022 suggested prices".
